This is some of the rhetoric you will hear as arguments against joining PCACP
1. AZCOPS' Legal package has a 5,000 dollar cap - False. There is no cap for representation within our Legal Plan. The cap that is mentioned is for members who choose to retain their own legal counsel instead of using AZCOPS attorneys. Those members are still eligible to receive up to 5,000 dollars in benefits. 2. AZCOPS is responsible for the FOP selling out the CO's - The FOP makes their own choices. The leaders of the FOP made their choice (please refer to Eric Hahn's letter dated May 24, 2001 and Warren Hock's recent letter). They should accept the responsibility for their own decisions. 3. We should fight for respect within the FOP instead of abandoning it - Why should we have to fight with our own organization? Our fight is with the Board of Supervisor's for our raises and benefits, not the Deputies! Besides, according to the FOP Bylaws, CO's are not even eligible members, only police officers with the power of arrest. Some FOP members try to say that because CO's take persons into custody at Judicial Security, we are considered to have arrest powers by the FOP leadership. If that were true, why hasn't FOP fought for parity pay all these years? The FOP has had many years to change their bylaws to include CO's, but will not. 4. PCACP does not offer life insurance - True, but the AFL-CIO does and, as a member of PCACP, you are eligible to exercise that option. 5. The FOP has financial assets to offer (social hall, 50,000 dollar Certificate of Deposit) - The FOP is a great social organization, but PCACP is here for Employee Representation! 6. AZCOPS almost lost the 20 yr. retirement for CO's by attaching dispatchers to the legislation. - The bill that made it to Governor Hall for signature was the bill introduced by AZCOPS. Dispatchers are eligible to form their own union under AZCOPS. AZCOPS was supporting one of their organizations. AZCOPS fought hard for the 20 yr. retirement. It was our elected officials that almost cost you the retirement bill. Put the blame where it belongs! 7. The Deputies' Association (PCDSA) is behind the PCACP just to get the CO's money. FALSE! PCACP is an independant member of AZCOPS. Our funds and our leadership are totally independant from the PCDSA. 8. Only FOP members will benefit from the lunchbreak lawsuit settlement - The AZ Court of Appeals ruled against the FOP lawsuit on Friday June 01, 2001. 9. An AZCOPS affiliate (CLEAT) has a history of corruption - AZCOPS was previously contracting legal representation through CLEAT (a labor union of law enforcement officers in Texas). Two former attorneys of a CLEAT affiliate, the San Antonio Police Officer's Association, and the President of that organization were discovered to have been engaged in laundering money. Those individuals were prosecuted. As of Jan 2001, AZCOPS no longer contracts with CLEAT for legal representation coverage. AZCOPS contracts their own attorneys, Michael Picarretta and Armand Salese. The FOP should not acuse an entire organization of corruption based on the heinous acts of those individuals. 10. There should only be one organization representing the Corrections Officers. We agree 100 percent! We feel that we are that organization. Join Today!
